the thing itself.net: Creating and evaluating user-centred content

About our name

The British poet and novelist Helen Dunmore and the American poet Wallace Stevens are jointly responsible for our name.

In July 2006, Helen Dunmore wrote an article about planning her own website. In it, she said:

I realised that the website would not work well unless it offered readers – and potential readers – something authentic, and unique. The website must be, in the words of Wallace Stevens, 'not ideas about the thing, but the thing itself'.

This struck us as a succinct description of the websites we aim to help our clients create – hence our name.
